Northern Virginia clay does not soak up much. After a hard rain the water sits where the yard is lowest, or runs straight off the roof and pools against the house. Both problems have the same answer: collect the water and carry it somewhere it can leave.
We install French drains through areas that stay wet, and bury downspout lines so roof water is released well away from the foundation instead of at its base.

What is a French drain?
A trench lined with fabric, filled with gravel and a perforated pipe. Water in the soil finds the gravel, enters the pipe and flows out to a lower point.
Where does the water go?
To a lower part of the property, a pop-up emitter in the lawn, or the street side where that is allowed. We work out the outlet before anything is dug.
Will burying my downspouts help a wet basement?
It often helps, because roof water dumped at the foundation is a common cause. It is not a guarantee, and we will tell you honestly if the problem looks like something else.
Will my lawn be torn up?
There is a trench while the work is done. We backfill, grade and seed or sod it afterwards.
